Periods

In Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum Online inscriptions are dated wherever possible. We use

• exact dates, e.g. 331/0 B.C.
• from-to dates, e.g. 300/299–230/29 B.C.
• periods, e.g. 4th cent B.C. or in the time of Eubulus and Lycurgus

This information can be searched in a number of ways:

1. Full text search to find dates as they occur in the entries
2. Faceted search to find periods
3. From-Until search to find date ranges and exact dates

In the search facet Periods, we show two kinds of labels:

• Six larger periods: Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Late antique, Byzantine period.
• Centuries or parts of centuries, e.g. II AD, early IV BC, etc.

note about the EAGLE labels

In the search facets, the names of the period and the dates of the periods are taken from the EAGLE network. This is the Europeana network of Ancient Greek and Latin Epigraphy, an international federation of epigraphic databases, part of Europeana. Among EAGLE's resources are the vocabularies, and among them are the dating criteria. These formally define periods in a machine-readable way.

For example, we use IV BC as "prefered label" for the fourth century B.C., rather than, say, IV a.C. or fourth century BCE. This period is defined by EAGLE as from -0399 and to -0300. Here follows the complete EAGLE "record" for the fourth century
